The knee joint is One of the most complicated single joint in the body.
The proper alignment and function of the knee is essential to our most fundamental activities of walking and running.
Most of us have experienced knee pain for at least once in life. The most common type of knee pain is often a simple nagging or aching sensation underneath the kneecap or around the knee joint itself.
Knee pain can be due to traumatic injury or so-called “normal wear and tear”.
Either the cause, correcting the underlying problem is the key to a fast and effectdive recovery.
Knee pain can fall into two basic categories:
• Primary knee pain; occurs when the knee pain is a result of direct injury to the knee or a dysfunction of the knee itself.
• Secondary knee pain is knee pain caused by the bodies attempt to compensate for an injury or dysfunctionselsewhere in the body, secondary knee pain can be a result of a problem in the calf, thigh, hip, ankle, foot, low back or even the shoulder!
· The intricate and complex structure of the knee itself makes it vulnerable to a wide range of problems and requires superior diagnostic skills and bio-mechanical expertise to correctly assess and to successfully treat.
· 90% of knee pain is NOT due to structural damage and are thus not surgical cases, yet can be just as crippling, and place severe restrictions and limitations on the activities you enjoy.
· Chronic knee pain often leaves patients feeling very frustrated and even hopeless in trying to enjoy their favorite activities ever again. In fact, recurrent knee pain is a very common reason for many runners to be advised by their doctors to find a different hobby!
This type of frustration is understandable because the traditional therapies for treating general knee pain involving heat, ice, ultrasound, muscle stimulation or exercise alone are slow, incomplete, and inefficient in prevention of future recurrence and only results in a long slow recovery at best, because they do not address the underlying causes of secondary knee pain.
At Action Performance Care, any knee complaint warrants a complete biomechanical evaluation of the entire body.
This examination is aimed at identifying the unique cause of your specific type of knee problem because all knee pain is not the same and your particular type of knee pain can be very different from that of your neighbors, even though both of you may have similar symptoms.
At Action Performance Care, we specialize in rapid, effective and systematic treatment of knee pain. We are uniquely qualified in the field of biomechanical diagnosis, ART treatment and prevention of all types of knee pain with treatment programs that are as ideal for the non-athlete as they are for the professional level athlete.
We are committed to get you back to top condition and free of pain in minimum time. Helping men and women like you to resume the life and activity you enjoy is our primary mission and we look forward to helping you to a new pain-free you!

The Female Hormone System: Cycles, Fertility, Bone Health, Brain Function and More!
– Jim Chialtas, L. Ac., Functional Medicine / Nutrition Expert.
If there is one thing that I can say about our bodies, it is that hormones are powerful.
Just look at a budding teenager with all their acne, high temper, huge growth spurts and their personal misconception of their own grandeur. Or perhaps look at the dramatic changes in outlook a woman may experience throughout her monthly cycle. And then there is peri-menopause with the hot flashes and other uncomfortable symptoms that can often accompany this phase of life. There is no doubt that hormones have the potential to both help us thrive as well as make us feel terrible if they are not operating optimally.
I think that this is something that we all can understand and have experienced ourselves at some point in time at least. And there are a great many people who seek hormone replacement therapies in an attempt to regain what they feel they might have lost over the years. But perhaps we can find out why hormones are not optimal in the first place? And even if someone is already taking hormone replacement therapy perhaps we could help optimize how those hormones work in their body. What if it was as simple as a blood sugar imbalance? Or what if it was associated with the liver not being able to detoxify the body optimally? And what if the very same mechanisms that promote the hormone imbalance also promote neurological decline, bone loss and chronic disease?
When working with our health we must realize that things are rarely ever simple and they always interplay with other systems. We simply must consider how our hormones impact, and are impacted, by the other areas of our body.
To illustrate this point I want to offer you a scenario that may sound all too familiar.
Meet Janet… She is a 45 year old working Mom. She gets up at 5:30am to start breakfast and do anything else that helps get her kids off to school. She goes to work, usually skipping a good breakfast for herself, but she does get in a latte on the way and has a blueberry muffin once at the office. Over the last few years Janet has noticed that no matter what she does, those extra 15 pounds just won’t come off! She goes to Pilates Tuesday and Thursday and Yoga Monday and Wednesday and Spin on Friday. Saturday is swimming and rest Sunday. Sounds great right?
Well it should and could be. But for her it isn’t doing the trick like it once did. And if one more person tells her, “Yep, that’s getting older for you,” she is going to scream. Aside form the weight concerns she has noticed that she isn’t as interested in some of her favorite things anymore. Going out with friends for a nice glass of wine just doesn’t seem as fun. Her libido is down as well which is putting some strain on her relationship. Food doesn’t taste as good anymore, but she still craves chocolate for some reason. And, although she does not want to admit it, she has had to start plucking some new dark hairs on her chin!!
For most this would be the time to go see your doctor. The trouble is, Janet has already seen both her gynecologist and her family medicine doctor, and no one has been able to give her any real advice. Eat less and exercise! “Right, got it… And already doing that thanks. Can I have my Co-Pay back?” This is when someone recommends she go see a Functional Medicine Practitioner.
Functional Medicine looks deeper into the various mechanisms that might be causing all of Janet’s symptoms. For example, she might have a blood sugar disorder going on which puts the body into a sort of alarm reaction. Or there may be some low-grade thyroid imbalances. Or elevations in testosterone! Yes, her female hormones may be out of whack, but why? If she does not sort out the ”Why” then she won’t get very far in recovering from her condition in the long run. That is where functional blood chemistry comes in.
One very important thing to consider for Janet is that she is approaching menopause and working with her underlying blood chemistry patterns now can only help her transition in the most healthy and natural way possible. Remember, menopause is a natural process, not a pathology as it is often sold to us, and it does not have to be a terrible experience to go through. It is the women who don’t have the basic health concepts settled before menopause who not only feel the worst, but have the poorest outcomes later in life.
So come and hear all about the female hormone system at our upcoming open house event!
We will be discussing all about female hormones throughout a woman’s life, how these things are tested for and treated in both the mainstream and functional medicine arenas, and some of the common consequences of a hormone system that is not working optimally. If you are concerned about your hormone status, bone health, neurological decline, sexual function, or just aging optimally, come and hear this information. We will look forward to sharing some knowledge and assisting however we can.
