I hope you all have had a great summer! We had a great one, with our many changes to our Action family.
Many of you noticed that our previous staff Monica and Traci are no longer here. They both moved out of the state due to family reasons but are both still on staff with our office and are working on projects that they can perform remotely, thanks to modern day technology! It is so great to be able to keep our awesome team together, even though some are more than an arm’s length away now.
Please join me in welcoming our new staff Jessica and Nikki! Actually, neither are so new anymore – both ladies have been with us for about 3 months and many of you have already had your encounter with them, either in person or via the phone. They have been taking over the office and making many great changes to our operation, allowing us to serve you better and more efficiently!
Together with Linda, who has been with us for over 4 years and who has been doing tireless ground work for our day to day operation as well as at sports events, our Action Family is here to serve you the best way we can.
Dr. Anna and I are here to help you with your aches and pain and to serve all your musculoskeletal needs. Dr. Ben has decided to focus his practice at his old gym in 4S ranch, and if any of you misses him please feel free to ask us for his current contact information.
I have some good news for you; our Functional medicine/nutrition expert Jim is back in the office after his one-month leave. He will be presenting some very useful information at our next open house on Sat 09/16 – don’t miss it!
David is engaged in much traveling and teaching, but the good news is that his protégé TJ is here to serve your needs on any change work in his absence – please don’t hesitate to ask staff about his schedule.
We here announce our Fall open house! In response to popular request, the Fall open house will be a focused topic event as a Sequel to our July Detox event. So far you have learned quite a bit regarding a good liver detox with a great anti-inflammatory diet and supportive supplements loaded with the right kind of vitamins and herbs.
If you have not got a chance to do it yet, it is a great time right now, at the end of summer and beginning of fall, when everything is slowly railed back on track after vacation, kids summer break, traveling, etc.
Here I want to make an important correction on an assumption brought up by a few patients: Should we stay on the Liver Detox cleanse (with the supplements / herbs) indefinitely? Yes and No.
A Detox jumpstarts your health by initiating you into an anti-inflammatory diet and getting your body to respond. Those of you who have done it or have been doing it have consistently been reporting 4-10 lbs. of stableweight loss and feeling much improved energy.
We naturally want to stay on what make us feel good, right? Again, yes and no. We definitely want to stay on the new anti-inflammatory diet that your body has become accustomed to.
However, after you are stabilized on it for 3-4 weeks, you slowly re-introduce the food you cut out for the Detox following the guideline and do the appropriate monitoring and measurement as we discussed before. Once you are sure what to keep and what to remove from your food list, you stick to it.
So for this part – yes, you stay on the anti-inflammatory diet with modifications – that is a permanent change.
But you DO NOT do the liver detox supplements / meal substitution indefinitely. You do it for no more than 3 weeks at a time. You can repeat it every 3 months, half a year, or annually, like a Spring house cleaning or Seasonal cleaning. There is a good reason for that, and we will discuss that in the future.
So what is the next logical step after the Detox then? After we eliminate many of the inflammatory foods in our diet it is time to Repair, Rehab, and Fortify our natural digestive and defense systems!
Why? So the leaky gut problem caused by the intestinal inflammation can heal, the gut can become less susceptible to inflammatory attacks, and nutrients can be delivered to us much more effectively.
If we use skin care as an analogy, then Detox is like the facial cleanse and the Repair is like the moisturizer and night cream you put on to hydrate and protect the skin.
Do you know that a lot of aches and pain in the body have to do with the weakened or hyper-sensitive immune system and that correcting it can help your physical pain quite a bit too? Do you also know that leaky gut can be the culprit for persistent inflammation in the body, including joint and muscle pain?
Do you want to find out how to effectively repair your gut and to transform your hard work on the Detox and Cleanse into an even more stable long-term outcome? Come to our open house on Saturday 09/16/17, and hear our Functional Medicine and Nutrition expert Jim Chialtas present this subject in Depth!
If you are still on the fence regarding Detox and Cleanse, come to the talk! You will find out more information on Detox as well as gut repair and restoration, since the two processes are quite intertwined.

Is anyone else out there fascinated with the digestive tract… Or is it just me? And why on Earth would I want to talk about “Leaky Gut Syndrome” anyway? It is a rather eloquently named pathology, don’t you think? It isn’t as graphic as the name might imply but that does not mean that it isn’t something to be concerned about.
Going back as far as ancient Greece Hippocrates even realized that, “All disease begins in the gut!” This ancient wisdom has only been built upon and is now much better understood. In our upcoming talk we will be getting into much more detail about this condition regarding testing and therapeutic strategies, but in the meantime please read on and get a background of what we will be discussing during our presentation.
Quite simply put Leaky Gut Syndrome is no more than a nasty inflammation problem. Inflammation of this part of our body can lay the framework for a great many different conditions to occur. It is important to understand that the lining of the digestive tract is an extremely important part of the body, not only for the digestion and absorption of our food, but also as a barrier to the outside world.
Even though it is located within the confines of our skin, the inside of our intestinesreally is still technically the outside of our body. By this I mean the food and nutrientshave not yet passed through the intestine and into the blood stream.
The intestinal barrier system is vital for keeping our reactivity to the outside world in check. If something breeches this barrier the , can quickly act and stop the invading threat. This being the case it is surrounded with a massive amount of immune system glands and white blood cells. However, when the immune system is activated we have inflammation. This is a good thing for a short-term threat but not when it is something going on every day or with every meal.
In a healthy gut, the cells are packed tightly together to form the lining of our intestines. Once our food is broken down appropriately the very small particles are then actively transported through the lining and into the blood to be made into energy or used in some other beneficial way. Once the lining of the gut has become inflamed due to infection, drugs/medication/alcohol, food allergies, high cortisol, or a myriad of other things, the cells that make up the lining of the intestines begin to swell and separate just a little. This is called “Leaky Gut,” or “Intestinal Permeability.” Once this has occurred there is no longer a nice tight junction between the cells, and slightly larger particles of food can pass through the lining.
As I mentioned before, the immune system is only tolerant to very small particlespassing through this barrier. These larger particles getting through due to a Leaky Gut are now recognized as foreign invaders and an immune response is launched against them. And as I said, this response is inflammatory in nature.
So, from then on you have a viscous cycle taking place. The more inflammation you have the more the intestinal cells allow larger particles to pass through leading to more inflammation… Do you see the pattern? Very quickly the things that you like to eat most become damaging to your system and you get more and more inflammation.
This is bad news! “Does that mean that I can’t eat my Hot Pockets anymore?” Yes, I think it probably does since the four most reactive foods are egg, soy, dairy and gluten. Sorry about that! And this does not even take into account all of the chemical and geneticallymodified food proteins that can also lead to gut inflammation. So do you think that there might be some benefit in taking a break from these things from time to time and taking measures to help repair this extremely important barrier system? We will talk about all of these things in our upcoming event.
Most people think of inflammation as something that leads to pain like in diverticulitis or colitis if it is in the gut, or arthritis if it is in the joints. And it certainly can involve those things. But people get into trouble when the inflammation is low grade and goes under the radar. The body recognizes this inflammation as a stressor and sets the person up for big problems like vascular disease, cancer, autoimmunity, weight gain, and many other chronic conditions.
In fact, if there is ever a problem that the doctor just can’t figure out, chances are there is a gut inflammation going on in the background. Leaky Gut Syndrome is often not noticed by the person, or may present with other symptoms that are not all that obviously linked to gut health, like brain fog, joint pain or fatigue.
However, there are some fantastic blood tests which can screen for this condition and help us determine the best strategy for the repair of the gut barrier and for moderating this inflammatory condition. I look forward to explaining this testing in much better detail during our upcoming talk.
If there is one thing that I want you to take home from this article it is this: The surface area of the gut is enormous and has a huge impact on health in general. Take care of your gut. Do not fill it full of poison (even if it tastes like Hot Pockets!) and keep an eye out for inflammation in the body. Just about all chronic diseases have their start in low grade inflammation, and once the gastro-intestinal system is inflamed, disease pathways are well on their way.
Shoulder pain affects a large number of our population and almost all of us have had some experience with it. Severities of shoulder pain can range from a temporary discomfort to serious debilitation, but don’t worry! Our Doctors can help!
Shoulder Pain can stem from many problem areas.
We have solutions for
Rotator cuff syndrome
Decreased range of motion
Tendonitis or tendosis
Have you tried everything from stretching, ultrasound, heat, to electrical muscle stimulation without full pain relief and recovery? Are you tired of having treatment forever? Are you missing your favorite sport? Has your Doctor recommended surgery?
Problems of Conventional Treatment:
Almost any problems with your shoulder always involve multiple structures (joints, muscles, tendons or ligaments) in or around the shoulder joint.
Shoulder problems are also frequently intertwined with neck problems because neck and shoulder are so close to each other, not only regarding location, but also in terms of their biomechanical function. Many muscles bridge between the neck and the shoulders and there are many movements of the shoulders that require the help of the neck. Conversely, neck tension frequently causes shoulder problems as well.
This is why many of the diagnoses are interrelated functionally and why what you are labeled by your diagnosis may not be most relevant to how you should be best and most effectively treated.
How We Make a Difference:
Our highly specialized Doctors use a combination of Active Release Techniques with precise biomechanical diagnosis to help you get back to where you want to be as quickly as possible.
